Hamaguchi, who is currently in Paris preparing for the movie, penned the script with L\u00e9a Le Dimna, loosely inspired by a collection of real-life exchanged letters published in the book \u201cYou and I \u2013 The Illness Suddenly Get Worse,\u201d by Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d is produced by David Gauqui\u00e9, Julien Deris, Jean-Luc Ormi\u00e8res, Renan Artukma\u00e7 at Paris-based\u00a0Cinefrance\u00a0Studios; Hiroko Matsuda, Kosuke Oshida, Yuji Sadai at Japan\u2019s Office Shirous & Bitters End; Bettina Brokemper at Germany\u2019s Heimatfilm; and Joseph Rouschop at Belgium\u2019s Tarantula. Diaphana, who handled Hamaguchi\u2019s last three movies, will release \u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d in France, while Bitters End will distribute it in Japan.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hamaguchi broke through the international scene in a major way in 2022, after garnering four Oscar nominations for \u201cDrive My Car,\u201d including best director and adapted screenplay, as well as Japan\u2019s first ever for best picture, and won for best international feature.\u00a0Since then, he directed \u201cEvil Does Not Exist\u201d which premiered at Venice and won the Silver Lion and the Fipresci prize, and the experimental silent piece \u201cGift.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the book \u201cYou and I \u2014 The Illness Suddenly Get Worse,\u201d which was brought to Hamaguchi by\u00a0Matsuda from Office Shirous, a philosopher and an anthropologist are exchanging letters discussing their thoughts on chance and risk, and their relationship develops into something more personal when the philosopher\u2019s health suddenly deteriorates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\u201cDeath becomes a subject they discuss and exchange a lot about, and gradually, it becomes an encounter between two souls,\u201d says Hamaguchi, who ultimately decided to transpose the story in France, and turn the epistolary relationship into a real one between two women, a Japanese theater director and French director of a nursing home.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The film will shoot mainly in Paris. \u201cI\u2019d like to show a Paris that\u2019s a little different from the clich\u00e9s we might have about the city,\u201d says Hamaguchi. \u201cI\u2019m starting to discover some places that aren\u2019t touristy. So I think that will give a slightly different view of Paris than usual,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cAll of the Sudden\u201d will mark Hamaguchi\u2019s first collaboration with Gauqui\u00e9 at Cinefrance, whom he met in 2022 during\u00a0one of his trips\u00a0to Japan\u00a0once\u00a0the country\u00a0had\u00a0reopened its borders after the pandemic.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cI had been eager to meet (Hamaguchi) for some time because I love his work so we sat at a caf\u00e9 in Shibuya and instead of discussing a specific project, we talked about French cinema in general,\u201d Gauqui\u00e9 says. The producer said he noticed Hamaguchi was French cinema buff and \u201cexpressed (their) clear intention to produce (his) next feature.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cFrench cinema has always\u00a0been\u00a0an important inspiration for me but also for many other Japanese people and Japanese filmmakers.\u00a0Chabrol, of course, but to a larger extent\u00a0the Nouvelle Vague,\u201d says Hamaguchi, who also cited \u201cRohmer, Rivette, Godard, Truffaut, obviously, and even before them Gr\u00e9millon, Becker, Renoir and Bresson.\u201d He\u2019s currently \u201ctrying desperately to learn French,\u201d he says, adding that \u201cmuch of my vision as a filmmaker is also based on French cinema.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hamaguchi and Gauqui\u00e9 were also connected through Kiyoshi Kurosawa who made his 2024 thriller \u201cSerpent\u2019s Path\u201d with Cinefrance. \u201cKnowing that\u00a0David\u00a0(Gauqui\u00e9) had worked with Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is one of my teachers, it was as if the stars were aligned for us to work on this project together,\u201d says Hamaguchi.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When they started developing the project, Hamaguchi explains that they thought about what could create this bridge between France and Japan, and came up with a treatment approach called \u2018humanitude.\u2019 \u201cIt\u2019s French method that was imported in Japan and is now practiced in several venues\u00a0there, and puts the human dimension at the heart of the treatment\u00a0care, for the integrity of each human being.\u201d The concept of \u2018humanitude\u2019 is applied to other fields, including the film world.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Speaking of the cast, Hamaguchi says he\u2019s known Virginie Efira \u201cmainly through the films she made with Paul Verhoeven, particularly \u2018Benedetta.’\u201d \u201cWhen I found out I was going to be able to work with her, I was really eager and happy,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As for Okamoto, he saw her in James Mangold\u2019s \u201cWolverine\u201d and noted she \u201calso started a career in Japan.\u201d \u201cThey are both really talented actresses,\u201d pointed out Hamaguchi.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For the last two years, the Japanese filmmaker has been traveling to France to develop his project and even hosted a workshop with French actors to see how they work. \u201cIt\u2019s an approach I\u2019ve never seen before, but I found it very interesting,\u201d Gauqui\u00e9 said.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The film is co-production between France, Belgium, Germany and Japan. \u201cRyusuke (Hamaguchi) is a very unique filmmaker who is extremely skilled at writing dialogues,\u201d said Sadai at Japan\u2019s Office Shirous & Bitters End. \u201cHis scripts and mise en scene make him stand out of all other directors in Japan,\u201d Sadai continued.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t
